Psychic Sylvia Browne’s Near-Death Experience Revelations

Sylvia Browne (1936-2013) ( was a near-death experiencer and a working psychic for more than forty years. Her books were New York Times bestsellers and she appeared on a long list of television programs. This acclaimed psychic had introduced millions of people to a world beyond our own. She was the author of many books including, Adventures of a Psychic (1999), Blessings from the Other Side (2000), and The Other Side and Back (2000). In another book of hers, Life on the Other Side (2002), she explained the process of leaving this world for the next, and how we leave the Other Side to continue our life’s journey on Earth. In Sylvia’s 2008 book entitled, End of Days: Predictions and Prophecies About the End of the World, she predicted the Coronavirus Pandemic when she wrote:

“… in around 2020 a severe pneumonia-like illness will spread throughout the globe, attacking the lungs and the bronchial tubes and resisting all known treatments.” (Sylvia Browne, 2008).

The following is her near-death experience testimony and a summary of what she knows about life on the Other Side. Sylvia described this process more in-depth in her book which I highly recommend, along with all of her other books. When asked why many of her predictions turned out to be false, her response is that only God is 100% accurate.

1. Sylvia Browne’s Near-Death Experience

“I was forty-two and having routine surgery when I flatlined and encountered the following common events:

“The tunnel that immediately appeared didn’t come from up there somewhere, it actually rose up from my body, seemingly from my own etheric substance. Instead of leading up toward the sky, it led across, at maybe a twenty-degree angle, confirming that the Other Side isn’t some distant paradise beyond the clouds. It really exists right here among us, only three feet above our ground level, simply in another dimension with a much higher vibration than ours.

“I didn’t just feel completely alive as I moved through the tunnel, I was completely alive. Only my body, the vehicle I had traveled in during this lifetime; had conked out. I felt weightless, free, and exhilarated, filled with the peaceful certainty that everyone and everything I had ever worried about would be fine. With my newfound sense of timeless eternity, I knew that my loved ones and I would be together again in what would seem like almost no time at all.

“The legendary white light appeared ahead of me, with sacred brilliance and infinite knowledge.

“The figure of a loved one stepped into the large opening at the end of the tunnel, in my case my cherished Grandma Ada. The opening was wide enough that I could glimpse a meadow beyond her, like any grassy, flower-filled meadow on Earth with its colors enriched and magnified a thousand times.

“Obviously mine was on a near-death experience, and two things happened simultaneously to emphasize that point: when I reached out my hand to Grandma Ada, she reached out her hand as well, but her palm was facing me, in a gesture that meant stop. And at that same moment, I heard the faint, distant voice of a friend I’d left standing beside my hospital bed pleading, ‘Sylvia, don’t go, you’re so needed.’

“The sensation of returning to Earth made me feel as if a huge rubber band that had been wrapped around my waist and stretched to its limit was now pulling me back. One second my hand was just inches from Grandma Ada’s, and the next second I was snapped away from her and slammed back into the confining heaviness of my body.

“Not only was I not glad to be back, I felt angry, frustrated, and depressed for days afterward.”

2. A Brief Summary of Sylvia’s View of Life on the Other Side

Upon death, most people go through a heavenly process before entering into heaven. Evil people, instead of experiencing the tunnel and bright light upon death, are sent through what Sylvia calls the left door and enter into an abyss of empty, joyless, nothingness for a brief period of time. After they have reflected upon their actions, they are reincarnated back to Earth. People who commit suicide are sent to a place Sylvia calls the holding place. Here they must make a choice to either proceed through the left door or embrace God and move on to the light. People in the holding place shuffle slowly around in despair in a gray fog with their heads down until they make their decision. According to Sylvia, this is purgatory. It is interesting to note that many near-death experiencers, including George Ritchie, have seen this place.

Most people, who go through the heavenly process, go through a tunnel and towards the light of God. They return home to the place they came from on the other side. Here, they have a reunion with family and friends who have departed before them. After the reunion, most of us are lead by our spirit guide to a building on the other side called the Hall of Wisdom. In a sacred room, we see our lives flash before us on a device Sylvia calls the scanning machine. This device is a domed screen where our lives are placed out in three-dimensional holographic form. Once we have fully evaluated our lives, we are debriefed in an orientation process. This is when we discuss the lifetime previously lived and reviewed in the scanning machine. We meet with guides who are trained orientators who discuss ways of amending for previous mistakes. We receive help if we were unprepared for our crossing over into the spirit realm. If those whose transition is especially difficult, the orientation process is preceded by another process called cocooning. This is when the person is put into a restful, healing sleep for as long as it takes for them to feel healthy. In extreme cases, people are taken to a structure called the Towers where extremely confused people undergo a deprogramming process.

3. The Seven Levels of Advancement

Once a person has adjusted to the transition, they can visit a heavenly “Hall of Records” where historical data is stored such as the charts of everyone’s past lives. Another beautiful structure is the Hall of Justice where people go before the Council of Elders who are highly advanced spokespersons of God who help us decide how we are to progress further into the spirit realm. Sylvia describes seven levels of advancement and they are:

The Seven Levels of Advancement

Level 1: The reunion and homecoming previously discussed
Level 2: The orientation process previously discussed
Level 3: Becoming skilled in a particular vocation
Level 4: Becoming creative in the arts
Level 5: Researching areas of progress and passing the knowledge to Earth through a process of infused knowledge
Level 6: Becoming a teacher or leader
Level 7: Forfeiting your identity as a personality by willingly absorbing into the light of God

As it is on Earth, so it is in heaven in that life is what we make of it. On the other side, we do what we choose to do and advance as far as we choose to and when we choose to.

At some point, people recognize the need for even further advancement and therefore choose to return to Earth to gain this spiritual advancement. With the help of a spirit guide, they write up a new chart, an incarnation which will meet their goals. They then proceed to the Hall of Justice where they meet once again with the Council of Elders. Here, the council prepares people for their next incarnation. When they are ready to incarnate, their family and friends are gathered together to bid farewell. Once they have said their goodbyes, they can meet with a spiritual teacher, such as Buddha or Jesus, to embrace them in their divine light. People are then taken to the Towers and are eased into a deep sleep. The descent into the womb begins and a new life is born on Earth.

Psychic Ruth Montgomery’s Afterlife Revelations

Ruth Montgomery (1913-2001), a past president of the prestigious National Press Club, began her career as a Washington DC reporter. She wrote a book about the world-renowned psychic, Jeanne Dixon, called A Gift of Prophecy (1965). Jeanne Dixon was the psychic who warned President Kennedy not to go to Dallas on that fateful day. Her book on Jeanne Dixon was very successful and Ruth began looking further into the paranormal phenomenon. She soon discovered that she had the gift of “automatic writing” (trance typewriting) by which she could communicate with various deceased personalities. Despite all the ridicule and criticism, she was able to channel a great deal of information from the other side, specifically from her deceased friend, the famous spiritualist and medium, Arthur Ford. Ford was the psychic who successfully revealed Houdini’s secret code from the Other Side; and although there was a controversy about this, but it was never proven that Ford received Houdini’s code any other way but from his psychic abilities. From beyond the grave, Ruth Montgomery received startling answers to questions about life after death, such as: What happens after death? Where do we go? What is it like over there? Ruth Montgomery documented these revelations in a series of books: Strangers Among Us (1982), Here and Hereafter (1983), Threshold to Tomorrow (1984), A Search for the Truth (1985), The World Before (1985), A World Beyond (1985), Companions Along the Way (1985), Born to Heal (1986), Aliens Among Us (1986), Herald of the New Age (1987), and The World to Come (2000). The following is an excerpt from her book, A World Beyond.

1. An Example of an Unspiritual Person’s Death Experience

Let us take as an example a person who is so sure that there is no God and no hereafter that he treats others badly while on Earth and he feels no moral obligation to lend a helping hand or to be a decent citizen. When he makes the transition he is angry and tempestuous as he finds himself in a situation of his own making, surrounded by other greedy souls who, because they are in like situation, welcome him gleefully to the hell that they have created for themselves. He is shocked. These are not the type of people he wants to associate with. They are fiendish and ill-mannered, whereas he has been a stiff-necked, educated, and polished man, although he never gave thought to anyone but himself. He tries to break out of the fiendish group, but they surround him. He calls for help, but no one with a better nature can enter the group to save him. He has dug his own grave, so to speak, and is allowed to lie in it for a while.

He is utterly miserable, for he now begins to see the folly of his ways but does not know how to avert his fate. He is left there until his own remorse for sinful ways begins to penetrate his being and he acknowledges to himself that he wasted a lifetime, a rare privilege, by thinking only of himself. After he reaches full repentance he is then able to free himself of the unrepentant creatures around him, and for a long time thereafter he searches his own soul to review the past mistakes. This is sometimes a long, drawn-out process because he will have to make his way alone. Only he is able to assess his wrongs and seek forgiveness, although there are many here willing to lend a hand whenever he reaches out to them for it.

[Webmaster note: The description of the above person’s death experience sounds uncannily similar to the near-death experience by Howard Storm whom I profile on this website. Ruth Montgomery revealed the above information about a decade before Howard Storm’s experience. Comparing the two accounts reveals a strange synchronicity that goes well beyond coincidence in my opinion. Also, it is extremely unlikely that Howard Storm made up his experience based on the above description. Once you read his experience, you will see why.]

2. An Example of a Murderer’s Death Experience

What of a murderer who deliberately kills another for his personal gain or satisfaction? This is not a pretty story. Full of hatred or vengeance, he expects to find nothing when he passes through the door called “death“, and for a long time that is usually what he finds – nothing. He is in a state like unto death for a goodly while, until at last something arouses him, and he wakens to find out that the hell he had every reason to expect is indeed awaiting him. It is not goblins and devils that he sees, but visions of his own face distorted by hatred, greed, malice, and other defeating emotions. He cringes from the sight, realizing that he sees himself thus, that he himself was possessed of a devil, and that except for his baser nature he would have been able unaided to cast him forth. He is appalled as he realizes that he wasted a lifetime of opportunity. Not for him is enrollment in the Temple of Wisdom or the higher school of learning.

This soul will stay in torment for a long, long time, until he believes himself to be totally lost. When he eventually reaches this pit of despair, he may at last cry out to God to rescue him and that wail of despair is heard by God. Other souls are sent to ease his suffering, and if his will is truly uplifted toward spiritual development, he will slowly, slowly, slowly begin to work himself upward until he has learned the penalties for taking another’s life which was given by God. When he is sufficiently strong to do so, he will accost the person whose life he took, and their reaction is such as to ring bells in paradise; for, as likely as not, the other soul has conquered self to such an extent that he has already forgiven the suffering soul who cut short his span of physical life. This forgiveness uplifts the murderer to such an extent that he is gradually able to take his place in the society of other souls and finally to learn some of the lessons of salvation. Remember that a soul on this side, just as on your side, is never without help from God and the good souls whom God created in his own image. Ask and ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it will be opened unto you. That is the law of the universe. Ask, receive; knock, open the door of your mind and let the rays of universal love flow in.

3. An Example of a Drug Addict’s Death Experience

People who die as an alcoholic can hover around people on Earth who drink too much, lusting after the pleasures of alcoholism yet unable to break the bond of habit which bound them to their physical bodies. The same with heavy smokers or drug users, there or here, or the sex maniacs who take advantage of others to appease the bodily craving for intercourse. This is a very important lesson which we learn on this side. To escape the perpetual cycle of rebirth into physical form, we must erase the ties, the shackles which bind us to satiation of the physical body. So try to lick the bad habits while on Earth. It is easier by far than to come unloose from them on Earth. Those who neither drink nor smoke nor use drugs nor lust after sex will be free of those shackles on the other side.

It is easier while in physical form to break those shackles than it is to undo them on the other side, where no temptations are put in our way. Thus, there is no reward for behaving correctly here in spirit, because there is nothing to tempt us otherwise. The hard school is in the physical one, and there it is there that we must meet and overcome the temptations.

[Webmaster note: The above example of drug addict’s afterlife experience is strikingly similar to what George Ritchie observed during his near-death experience. Although Ritchie’s experience occurred in the 1940’s, it was not published until the mid-1980’s. This was well after Ruth Montgomery published the above account. Again, the similarities of both of these accounts is such that it goes beyond coincidence. To my mind, they both affirm the truth of these similarly described experiences.]

4. An Example of a Baby’s Death Experience

Let’s take the case of a baby newly born into the flesh who, after a brief struggle for life, withdraws back into the spirit state. The baby had wanted life, to be sure, and most likely had helped to select its parents, but what happened to alter the circumstances? Sometimes a soul enters a body so weakened by malformation that it will not sustain life, but more often it is the spirit which withdraws which results in the death of the baby. Let us take as an example a baby born into a lovely home where he is greatly desired but who lives only a few days, weeks, or months before the soul departs the body. That baby’s soul most certainly had something to do with the decision to withdraw. Perhaps at first there was a reluctance to enter the human body, or the spirit became convinced that that particular body was not the proper vehicle for working out the karma that obstructed its spiritual growth. At any rate, the baby’s soul was absent from the spirit world for such a brief period that little readjustment to the spirit world is necessary. Once again the soul takes stock of what has just occurred and assesses why it gave up the opportunity to become flesh again in order to solve its karmic problems.

The baby’s soul was not a baby, at least in the spirit world because all souls have been in existence from the beginning of time, although some of them are more highly evolved, far wiser and more meaningful than others as a result of experiences here on Earth states. No one in the spirit world is a baby.

The baby we used as an example above went back to the spirit world after a brief struggle as a baby in arms. The heart had been damaged in the physical body and therefore could not sustain life. The soul was disappointed at first when it returned here because babyhood is by no means an ideal existence, he had nevertheless chosen parents whom he loved and surroundings where he felt that he would be able to repay some karmic indebtedness. That this opportunity was denied him by physical limitations speaks itself of karmic patterns, for this soul now realizes that it’s most recent life it ended the life of a new baby through neglect of its needs. Thus, although this was a life that he greatly wanted to complete, he had to make amends by withdrawing from that seemingly ideal situation. The so-called baby returns in the spirit world and after a brief period of adjustment, is ready to begin again in the temple of wisdom to learn how to resume the ascent toward the ideal of oneness with God. Because he has been gone from the spirit world only briefly, he needs little re-instruction, but if he had been a physical baby for two or three years, there would be souls in the spirit world ready to help him adjust psychologically to bring him out of the baby syndrome and into adulthood again.

5. An Example of a Fundamentalist Preacher’s Death Experience

Let’s take the case of a man of the cloth, a Billy Sunday-type who preaches hellfire and brimstone and believes every bit of the Good Book literally. He dies, and after the first shock of discovering that God is not sitting on a throne surrounded by angels, he begins exhorting people here to repent before it is too late. He thinks that this is a very brief interlude until he adjusts, and that the rest of us are probably lost souls who lack the righteousness to advance into God’s waiting arms. His sermons here actually do draw souls who hunger for the kind of heaven that their finite minds had conceived, and they think that this Billy Sunday-type will lead them rapidly to the promised land. They throng to his sermons and shout “Amen,” while he tells them that within a very short time they will all advance into heaven with a retinue of angels playing harps. ‘Amen’, they shout again, and are grateful that one of their own, at last, has arrived to open the gates of the temple. This preacher, who we’ll call Billy, at first rants and exhorts, demanding to know of the older souls around here how he can find the way to the throne of God, because he honestly believes that it is being concealed from him in some mysterious way. At last the old souls gather around and explain to Billy that he is preaching a false doctrine; that heaven is within each man, and so is his private hell; that he has arrived, and nothing is being hidden from him. It is up to him to begin work on his own spiritual advancement, and he is retarding the progress of others by misleading them with false hopes of a promised land. For this is the promised land, and we make of it what we will through our own endeavors.

Wiser heads, so to speak, take Billy in hand, because he is a good but misguided soul. They suggest that he attend a Temple of Wisdom for a time to have his eyes opened to the one truth; that all of us are God, and that until all have realized this basic truth, none of us will advance beyond the basic state of man.

When we grasp the idea that each of us is as much a part of God as any other person, then we are able to spread the good word, which is that by helping these other parts of God we advance together to a higher realm of awareness, the veils drop from our eyes, and we are able to see exactly where and why we are here. Helping others is the watchword. Billy begins to grasp a glimmering of this universal law, and before long he is zealously spreading this word to others much as he was preaching hellfire and brimstone before. Basically he is an excellent soul, but through mistaken principles he was spreading a false line. Now he spreads the truth with the same eloquence, and soon he begins to assess his previous earthly existence, seeing where he misled others by not opening his own eyes and listening to the persuasive arguments of those who were less orthodox than he was when he held his close-minded beliefs. He is eager to undo the damage he has done, and through other ministers of like faith in the physical bodies he implants seeds of wisdom which, if placed in fertile soil, begin to sprout roots and spread truth among the misinformed. Because he is basically a fine soul, he will advance more rapidly here than those who knew the truth while in the physical state but failed to work as hard as this soul has done to uplift and help others.

6. A Church Lady’s Death Experience

Today we will look into the heart and mind of a woman who believes that she is of saintly qualities and who expects to be transported directly to the arms of God. She fears nothing so much as having others in higher places of authority and is determined to impress Saint Peter with her virtuous ways so that no mistake will be made at the judgment throne. She awakens on this side and looks about her for the pearly gates through which she will enter after admission by Saint Peter. All she observes is a platform on which sprawls an old soul who has been on this plane since eons past. Mistaking him for Saint Peter, she approaches and says, “Look here, sir. I am Mary Blunk and I wish to be taken to God.”

The old soul look pityingly at her and suggests that she rest awhile, but she will not hear of it. She had been sick in the physical body, and now that she has shed it she is full of anticipation for her seat beside the Father. She will brook no delay, so the old soul motions for her to pass along, and soon she arrives at a gate that is not nearly as magnificent as that which she was expecting. There is no lock and no gatekeeper, so she passes through and begins an ascent along a garden path. Flowers are blooming in profusion, but she pays them little heed, since she is bent on reaching the seat of God as quickly as possible. Along the way she encounters others who are either ascending or descending the path. Our heroine nods but rushes along, hoping to pass some of those who are toiling up the path ahead of her. Those who descend, she assumes, are rejected ones who are on their way to hell.

Pushing past those ahead of her, she eventually reaches a high stage and assumes that on top of it she will find God awaiting her with open arms. Now she adjusts her hair and clothing. She feels them reassuringly, for the raiment here is as real to her as that which she washed on Mondays at home. She glimpses a handsome young man and, assuming him to be an angel, asks sweetly, “Will you announce me, please, because I am in a hurry to bow my head at the knees of God.”

The young man slowly surveys the scene and finally replies, “But, madam, some of the newly arrived souls are still plodding up the hill which you have climbed.”

She impatiently requests that he address God for her so that she will not have to wait in the long line that is approaching. The young man smiles and says, “But, madam, how will you be saved until all those others who struggle upward are also rescued from the abyss below?”

The woman replies that she has nothing to do with them, since they are all strangers to her.

Finally another man approaches her, and she seems vaguely to recognize him as the old beggar down the street who was always holding out a tin cup when she hurried past his corner.

“What in the world are you doing here?” she demands of him.

He replies that he has only recently left his battered physical body and is now in the next stage of development.

The woman snorts that this seems an odd place for him to be hanging around, and she herself begins to mount steps that she has just noticed, which make an entrance to the pavilion where she assumes God is awaiting her. There at last she sees a man who seems to have a very spiritual face. Curtsying before him, she asks to be taken directly to God.

The man replies, “But, madam, all of us are God.”

She looks wildly around and notices that he is including the old beggar in that sweep of his arms. This annoys her, for that beggar never seemed to wash and his hair had always been matted, although she observes now that he gives the impression of cleanliness.

“Stop playing jokes,” she says. “Lead me to my Maker.”

“But, madam,” the beautiful young man says, “He created all of us, not just you, and He does not have time to welcome each and every one of you back to this temporary stage of development. The one over there whom you think of as a beggar will be a good instructor for you during this interim period until we are able to assist you and others to reach a higher state.”

Such argument as the poor woman gives him! She will have no part of taking the beggar for an instructor, or anyone else for that matter. Her business is solely with God, and she demands to know where she will find Him. Others are now crowding around, and some are also asking for God. They all want to know where He is, and the woman is indignant that many of them have caught up with her, so that she will no longer be first in line.

At last the young man turns to the throng of newly arrived souls and says sweetly, “Hearken, God is everywhere. God is love, and as surely as each of you learns to love and assist each other, there will God be working among you. Now take up the mantle and see if it fits you any better than those who surround you.”

“But where is the judgment seat?” the woman demands impatiently.

“You are sitting on it, madam,” the beautiful young man replies.

She looks wildly around, seeing no seat of any kind, and at last begins to perceive a glimmer of his meaning. She is to be the sole judge of herself. No one will tell her whether she has lived a pure and blameless life. She will have to work it out for herself, and as she begins to look within her own heart she discovers this terrible truth: In trying to live blamelessly, she has been thinking only of herself and her own spiritual growth. She was too busily concerned with her own goodness to think how to stop for a comforting word with those beneath her status. She had bethought herself to avoid contamination with those beneath her for fear that it would stain the white garments that she spiritually wore. Where was the love for others? Within herself lay all the answers. God would not have spoken more directly in His judgment than she was now able to do on her own. She who knew her own heart best was now appraising her shortcomings. No one would judge her, for she was the sole judge of self, and when she tried to assess the qualities of the beggar beside her, she knew that not in ten thousand years could she see into his heart and know his errors of commission and omission, for he also was the sole judge of himself.

7. A Primitive’s Death Experience

Arthur Ford next discussed the case of “a savage who had never been exposed to Christianity or any other organized form of worship except for the jungle cult.”

This lad died after having been bitten by a cobra and was about nine years old when he crossed over. He was a totally uncivilized as anyone who has never seen any form of cleanliness or civilization, because it was perhaps thousands of years since that lad’s previous incarnation and he had done little or nothing in the spirit form to improve himself. He slept for hundreds of years and was so disinterested in other souls here that when he finally decided to try on the physical body again, he was like a fish out of water. He lived only to eat and sleep, and what work he managed to do was solely to avoid beatings and cursings. He lived in ignorance, and he died in the same manner, and thus progressed no single jot in that lifetime. For that reason there was no point in continuing his physical existence, and here, although kindly souls are trying to awaken him, he continues to sleep or thinks of nothing but himself and his pleasures, which are few, except that he likes to torture animals. Thus, the snake bite was in the way of karmic indebtedness for what he had done to those beings which are less evolved than human beings.

This type of soul is highly depressing here, even more than in the Earth life, for there seems little to jog them into awareness of responsibilities and soul growth. But even that boy was no worse than many who, living in civilized areas with plenty to eat and much work to accomplish, give themselves over to riotous destruction instead. They in their next incarnations may find themselves in circumstances similar to those of this boy who perhaps many eons ago had been equally destructive and thus was unwilling to return to physical state in order to repay his karmic debts. Growth, development, love, constructive action, and consideration for others are the keys to unlock the kingdom of heaven, and those who use force and anger to destroy, instead of love to rebuild, are earning dire consequences for themselves in this spirit life and in future incarnations.

8. About Reincarnation

We learn now why the problem so often arises that some souls want to return again and again to the physical state without spending enough time in the spirit realm to assess all errors of the previous round and determine exactly how they expect to meet future temptations as they arise. Why would a soul want to rush back to Earth form before it is ready? Here they face the failing of so-called human nature: the zest for pleasures of the flesh, desire for too much alcohol, sex, body-building, and the like. Some are so overly fond of the bodies they left behind that they are hardly able to wait for an opportunity to enter another body and set to work indulging it.

These souls are truly earthbound and they will not be able to advance spiritually until they learn to give less thought to appetites of the flesh. Any habit-forming pleasure, and they are endless, traps them into the cycle of rebirth over and over, until their appetites are finally put aside while they are in the flesh – lust for money, lust for power, lust for sex, and other habits such as an unnatural craving for alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or any of the indulgences which they are unable to break loose from. This is a lesson for those souls that would like to break the cycle of rebirth.

Psychic Margaret Flavell Tweddell’s Afterlife Revelations

Margaret Flavell Tweddell was born with a clairvoyant ability that is so unique, during World War II she was commissioned by Lord Hugh Dowding, Marshal of the British Royal Air Force to use her ability to successfully trace missing RAF pilots. She is well known and respected for her accomplishments in the realm of paranormal psychology. Unlike Edgar Cayce, Margaret is one of those rare positive mediums who receives telepathic messages while in full control of her senses and not as a result of out-of-body experiences. As a Methodist, she is a deeply religious person, a spiritual counselor and a healer. As a friend of Margaret, Ruth Taylor asked Margaret to use her unique ability to contact Ruth’s deceased father, the Reverend A.D. Mattson. Mattson was a highly respected Lutheran theologian who, before he died, promised his daughter Ruth that, if it was possible, he would communicate with her from the Other Side. Ruth’s father fulfilled that promise when Margaret successfully received messages from him. The messages were long and detailed of what life on the other side is like. This information had such an impact on people that the messages were published in 1975 and became a classic. The book is entitled, Witness From Beyond, and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross remarked that this is “an important book to help in the understanding of life and the transition we call death – which is not the end of life but a new beginning with continued growth and challenges.” The following excerpts from this book will show you how unique this spiritual information from the other side really is.

1. Where is Heaven and Hell?

Concerning heaven and hell, it is not true that when we die we wait for a judgment day. Heaven and hell are not places – they are spiritual states of being. They are not static states but are states in which there can be growth and progress toward ultimate wholeness of being.

As there are degrees of heaven or hell on Earth, so there are degrees of heaven or hell in the spiritual world. The spiritual state of being you have on Earth is the spiritual state you take with you to the world beyond when you die.

There is no sudden metamorphosis from an idle person into an active person, from a nonreligious person into a religious person, from a money-centered person into a God-centered person. This is not an automatic thing. Your personality – your likes and dislikes, your hopes, your fears – are still attached to you, although in a more nebulous form than when you are on Earth in a physical body.

I see people come over. They arrive and have high hopes that everything is going to be different for them. However, nothing can be different for them because they have brought with them what they are. There is so much harmony here, and if they have brought a disharmonious personality with them, they find it very difficult to link in with the harmonious existence that we have. This is something that grieves me when I see it.

It is not true, as some people think, that if we only give verbal assent to belief in God, well, that’s fine – that is our passport to heaven and everything will be all right. What we have to remember is that Jesus showed us the path by which it will be all right. He doesn’t say, “It’s all right, brother, come along in. Sit down now and relax and do nothing.” He says, “It’s all right. You are on my way. There are a lot of stones in it, but you are on my way. If you ask me, I’ll help you over the stones.” The old teachings that “as you strive, so you’ll be helped” are right. The Lord helps those who help themselves.

If you truly try to follow the laws of the Kingdom which the Lord has revealed, and ask for his help, he will aid you in becoming a whole person. As I see it from here, there is a rod of light – a pulsating power, the vital force of the Holy Spirit – right down through you. It is the self-centeredness of the personality which erects blocks and disturbances which make it impossible for the Holy Spirit to function through you. If you ask for help from the great physician, the Lord Jesus, he will help you to unlock the inner, healing power of the Holy Spirit which is within you so that it can be diffused and can spread throughout your being. The Lord will help you to achieve the attunement, the shalom, the peace, the wholeness which is heaven.

Heaven is not sitting down and “casting down your golden crowns” and singing “Hallelujah.” However, I did notice that there is a tendency among certain sects or religious people over here to congregate in their little groups and have their little sessions of what they feel are “heaven.” This is an interesting fact. I am told by my teacher here that eventually they become very bored with this narrowness, and then their own helpers and teachers here try to give them another thought and another idea and help them to break away from this narrow approach.

We tend to feel that when we die, heaven is as we thought it – and it certainly is. As I’ve said, you can be received exactly the same way you always thought you would be received. You may remain in that narrowness if you want – you need never change unless you wish. God gives us perfect freedom in spirit.

The old notions are that you go “up to heaven,” and you go “down to hell.” We have not understood that it is merely a matter of vibration. The finer the vibration is, the nearer we are to heaven. Heaven is a state of being joyous, light, loving, harmonious, vibrant, God-centered and others-centered. The heavier the vibration, the nearer we are to hell. Hell is a state of being heavy, dull, dismal, gray, and glum – as when you are heavily depressed and self-centered.

People who have an orientation of hate, for instance, find themselves unable to appreciate a realm of love and harmony. Therefore, they continue in their state of bitterness and are “closed” to the glory which exists around them. I am told by my spiritual inspirer that they have to wait. These people wait and gradually they appreciate the fact that it is very destructive to hate like that. When they have had real hates and have been emotionally upset like that, or have had a real bitterness toward someone, then it takes them quite a period of time to get the light and the power around them again, to be able to appreciate this place or that, or go to the Valley of Praise, or go and hear beautiful music. They just hear discords, and eventually they come to the realization that ‘this isn’t much of a life, is it?’ And the moment that happens, those who are dedicated to work with this sort of person come and they have their methods of easing them away from the state they are in. It is like taking a skin off an onion. They will gently peel off this layer that is formed by hate – this shutting-in, restricting coat that comes on them with their violent, negative emotion.

2. Is There a Devil?

Just knowing the bad mistakes you made through your carelessness or your selfishness is a hell. You don’t need a devil prodding you with a fork. Believe me, your own anguished mind is a prod that is more hurtful than any prodding with a devil’s fork.

I met a man over here who said that he would gladly exchange good old Dante’s Inferno for the mental anguish he was experiencing over guilt feelings from wrong actions he had taken on Earth in certain business matters.

In Dante’s Inferno he would be able to complain that the devil was doing this to him, whereas now he had no devil to complain of because the devil was himself.

Whether there is a negative personal being who can be called the devil I cannot say. I have not seen anyone personified as the devil. There certainly is an evil force which builds up from the negative aspects of life and has a tremendous influence. Thought forms which are evil certainly play a part, but I don’t think they are the whole answer.

3. What is Jesus Like?

I have seen the Lord Jesus in all his radiance, in all his glory, but not immediately on arrival because then you are still with the dust and vibrations of your own thinking.

When I first saw him, the light and the glory and the surging of power was so tremendous. It was like an avalanche of feeling over me. At the present time I just don’t feel that I have found a way in which to describe what it was like – an indescribable contentment and uplifting, a tremendous ecstasy of feeling on all realms, being completely out of yourself, an unusually vivid knowledge of the intense, sympathetic love around you – the warmth of it, the light of it – something that is not external but is part of you. It is like a sunrise on a mountain that is covered with snow, when the colors come down and reflect on you – a dazzling brilliance that would make you close your eyes and yet feel it in every pore of your body. This is the feeling that you have as you come toward the LIGHT.

And then suddenly to hear the voice that says, ‘Look at me.’ And when you look – there, just as you’ve always imagined – you see him. He shows himself to us according to our own understanding. If I want to think of him as a man who walked by the lake and a man who looked as the Jews looked at that time, then I’ll see him that way. If in my thought I think he’s modern and bright, then I’ll see him that way. We do not see him as the medieval painters made him. We see him as we, in our own selves, have pictured him, because otherwise we wouldn’t recognize him. How would we know unless we have the picture already in our own being – in our own minds, in our own hearts.

To me he came walking across the air – across the tops of the buildings, the trees. I’d always known he’d come toward me with his arms and hands outstretched. He said, “Come, let me show you” – because I have an insatiable curiosity and I must see and I must know. But there was no “falling asleep in the arms of Jesus.” There was the knowing warmth of BEING that I’ve always known would be. It was so much beyond what words can tell.

It is true that the Lord Jesus can take a form so solid that those who are in the body may see him – those who are in the dream state may see him and be called by him. But when I saw him transcendent, I was days and days just marveling and sensing and knowing. This was my rebirth. The body in which I now function was strengthened – made resilient, firm, aware. When I first came over here, I only knew what I had known and seen, shall we say, in a vision. But that was to see and not to experience. Until you have experienced it and been caught up without the ties and the cord that keep you with the physical body, it is very difficult to comprehend.

Until you are released from the bondage of the physical body, you have no way of knowing the feeling and the uplifting and the thoughts that come into your head. The body is so much heavier than the personality which goes on. But even in your personality, there are times when you are completely detached – we call it a mystical ecstasy. Every time I turn my mind toward him now, I am engulfed in the power and time has no limits or meaning. It may be a flash, it may be hours – I know not. It is just a great knowing. I ask and he’s there. He says, “Follow me,” and we follow. But we don’t follow with our feet. The whole being of you follows him because he is everywhere – in and through and around and everywhere. He is a manifestation of God.

4. What is Eternity Like?

We don’t talk about time here. We talk about opportunity. We cannot think about time here because it is not measured off in days and nights and months and years.

I want to put on record that I find life here more interesting than one could dream possible, but it does detract from quiet thinking periods. I am slowly realizing that there is a greater need for self-discipline than when a physical body made its demands known. Then I had time divided up into sleep and waking, and the latter part divided into eating, talking, studying, teaching, walking, thinking, etc. Here there is so much to see, so much to hear, so much to do. One has to learn to set aside some “time” for one’s own personal self-discipline, because if the mind doesn’t control the body you can be in the same state of utter discord as you are when you are in the physical body. Discipline brings order, and it is absolutely imperative to have orderliness.

Here there is an overall awareness of what is going to happen on Earth six weeks, six months, or perhaps two years ahead. At times it is rather like being in an airplane looking down, and we get an overview or prevision of what is going to happen, due to our being able to see things in broader perspective. However, do not for one moment imagine that, now that we are here, we automatically have completely extended vision and have become seers. That is not true. However, we do have some who are seers here. They are souls who, through much trial, tribulation, and service, have been permitted to see in a more extended way.

Humanity has to think of life everlasting, manifested now in the present. This is very important. Life has been held very cheaply. Millions of people have been killed through devastation, torture, war, and man’s inhumanity to man. This has brought spiritual pollution on all levels.

We are just as much morally obligated to help our brothers on Earth when we are without a physical body as we were within a physical body. This is an aspect of truth that few people want to face. They think, “Oh, when I’m dead everything will sort itself out. There will be no troubles, and that will be that.” That is not true. God still gives us the opportunity and responsibility in the spiritual world to observe and to choose and to serve.

It is not going to be pleasant for a lot of people to know that, whether they like it or not, they are their brother’s keeper. We are each other’s keeper. We are each other’s deterrent. We are each other’s goad and help, because we are all part of the ONE pulsating, living, glorious WHOLE.

I say glorious in spite of the terrible things that are still happening in the world, because humanity is progressing up the spiral of evolution. From here we know that there is no problem, there is no pain, there is no ill, there is no disharmony in the whole of the created universe that eventually will not be made into harmony. This is an awareness that one gets here which is harder to achieve on Earth. It is something I want you to try to remember.

5. Is Heaven Limited Only to Christians?

Jesus reveals the way, the truth, and the life. However, unless we can give someone the true Christian experience of the Christ, it is not right for us to say to them, ‘You must not be a Buddhist – you must be a Christian.’ Unless we can give the true Christian experience of the Christ, then it is far better for us to leave them with the Buddha and that approach to God and to the word. It is wrong for us to say to a Hindu, “Oh, no, all that is wrong. You must be a Christian.” Unless we can give that person a true and deep understanding of the meaning behind the words that Jesus said – the sense of the knowing of the power of the meaning behind the word – then we have no right to take away their faith because there is an old saying that nature abhors a vacuum.

I am still utterly amazed at what I find here. Utterly amazed! There is love and there is harmony. There is music that transcends all thought. There is color, light, belonging, and there is being. It isn’t only in the one path of Christianity. You find it in many, many other faiths. All faiths which stress love have this focus. It is like reaching out to a sun and light comes down along different rays.

We are all walking. We Christians walk here, the Hindus walk there, the Buddhists walk in another place, and so forth. All have their own paradise, goals, aims, and objectives for so long. Then suddenly they are into the tremendous experience of knowing that all is one under God and that there is no division in purpose. There is one God of us all.

6. What are the Afterlife Realms?

The world in which we find ourselves immediately after death we call the “astral world.” From this point we can progress to higher realms – to higher levels of consciousness. By “higher” realms I do not mean spatially higher but rather those realms which have a finer vibration.

All of the various realms of consciousness have different frequencies of vibration. For instance, you assume that the matter of Earth is composed of atoms and that these atoms are composed of energy which vibrates. This matter of Earth is denser than the matter of the higher realms. As you can see light waves which vibrate at a “visual observing” rate, so you can see the matter of Earth. However, as you cannot see radio or television waves which vibrate at too fast a rate to be seen, so you cannot see the matter of the world beyond, unless you are clairvoyant.

The spiritual bodies of those who have died vibrate at a rate too fast for your physical eyes to see. However, they can be viewed by clairvoyants whose sight has been opened to receive this faster vibration.

You know, the world beyond is not up there somewhere. It’s here – a change of condition. It is all in one space like a big sponge, containing all the different frequencies of vibration – like soapy water, salt water, clear water, the different densities of water – you can relate it to the different densities or vibrations that I have here.

The astral world is almost a replica of your world, except that it is of a finer substance and we are not “bound” by our objective reality as you are.

On the astral realm we are conscious of our personalities and the modes of life we carried out on Earth. Therefore, we have denominations on this realm and we continue to practice the rites of our respective churches.

On numerous occasions since I arrived here, I have been permitted to go into the higher realms where there is a unity of God-praise, not a segregation of the praise of God. However, I feel very strongly that there is work for me to do here, helping to break down the barriers which segregate the churches. Therefore, I shall be a sojourner on this astral realm but the higher realms, where there is a unity of God-praise, will be my spiritual home.”

7. What is Hell About?

There is a condition which could be termed the “depths of hell.” People who have deliberately chosen to live debased or cruel lives and have turned their backs on the light of God find themselves in a state similar to groping in a dark and depressing fog. Everyone there is wrapped up in his own cruel thinking. These souls wander around in this lost state until they, of their own volition, make an attempt to turn toward the light of God. Some may be lost for eons of time.

There are souls called the “shining ones” who dedicate themselves to going into this dark realm and bringing spiritual light. The souls who are dedicated to this work of rehabilitation are clothed in protective garments so that they are not harmed or pierced by the dagger-like thoughts of hatred which those in the dark realms are throwing out. The shining ones are not allowed to go and talk to these people, but they stand nearby and call to them through thought – prayer, if you like. The moment the souls in this dark area respond in a positive way, the ones who have come to help are able to bring them out into a less dense, foggy world and eventually out into the realm of light.

Some people find themselves earthbound after death. This is a lower astral state. For example, people who die suddenly by accident, perhaps when they are young, are often loathe to leave the Earth as they feel a sense of incompletion of their earthly life. They stay close to the Earth, “haunting” the homes and places they have left. It is only through a process of education that they can be urged away from this unhealthy condition and helped to progress and grow in the new state in which they find themselves. Prayers made on behalf of these people from those still on Earth can be a great support and help. These prayers help release them to go on and partake of the ever-expanding life in the world beyond.

Persons who commit suicide before the time they are meant to die find themselves in a state of heavier vibration and closer to the Earth than those of us who died natural deaths. They remain in this state of density until the time when they would have normally died. They then may pass into the planes of finer vibration. People who have experienced death through suicide are greatly helped by the prayers and supportive thoughts from those still on Earth. They are also aided by those from the higher planes who are dedicated to help them grow spiritually during the period of waiting.

Among others, the lower astral planes also contain people who have been alcoholics or drug addicts, who find these cravings still with them in the astral bodies. They stay near the Earth to be near alcoholics or drug addicts who are still in the physical body, in order to participate vicariously in the sensations which alcohol and drugs give. They can be helped in the world beyond to clear their astral bodies of these cravings so that they, too, may go on and progress. However, this is a long and tedious process.

We have to try to convey to people still in the physical body that they can’t expect a sudden change for the better. They must help themselves while they are on Earth.

8. What Happens to Dogmatically Religious People?

Many people, when they come to the astral world, experience a great deal of turmoil and distress because they have been too positive and too dogmatic in their earthly lives and have tried to impose that dogmatism on other people. I think you can find, if you will think about it and look back at your own lives, that there are times when you wish you hadn’t been so forceful in persuading someone to do something. When one does this he is cutting across a divinely given attribute of each person, which is free will.

Dogmatic people who always “tell you the truth” are very uncomfortable people. They don’t understand how uncomfortable they are. When you watch it from here, you see the body blow that “truth” can be to people sometimes. If something is said too bluntly to a sensitive person who is seeking to improve himself, it can be such a damaging blow that he can retreat and give up.

People who go around “telling the truth” and bluntly dogmatizing on what they believe have fewer converts than they think they should have. They mistakenly believe that putting energy and force into what they say will produce converts. Actually, more converts come from demonstrating the law than ever come by dictating the law. This is something worth pondering about.

Psychic John Edward’s Afterlife Revelations

John Edward ( is an internationally acclaimed psychic medium who can communicate with the world beyond. Deeply compelling, often startling and even humorous, his honest and almost skeptical attitude regarding psychic phenomena has made the staunchest of skeptics take notice and listen. It has also earned him an enormous following from all walks of life and ages. He has authored several books including What If God Were The Sun? (2000) and Crossing Over (2001). The following is an excerpt from another book of Edward’s, One Last Time (1998), and is a transcript of one of Edward’s most interesting readings where he receives very specific and detailed information from the Other Side for a woman named Mary who lost her son in a tragic accident.

John: The first thing that’s coming through is your son. Do you have a son who’s passed?
Mary: Yes.

John: Has he passed in the last two years? Did he pass in June or July?
Mary: Yes.

John: Who’s Tony? Is that his dad? Please let his father know he’s okay. Very important. He says Dad’s all alone, lost.
Mary: That’s true.

John: He’s showing me a lacrosse stick.
Mary: His dad coaches lacrosse.

John: Is his father a teacher? Because he’s showing me my high school. I went to Glen Cove High.
Mary: He teaches at Glen Cove. You know him.

John: I know his father? Don’t say his name. Normally I wouldn’t say Glen Cove High School, I’d just say high school. Hold on. Is this an impact passing? Is this a vehicular kind of thing? Was he hit by a car? Was he on a bicycle?
Mary: Yes, he was.

John: He wants you to know he’s okay. Who’s Robert?
Mary: His grandpa.

John: He wants him to know he’s okay. And who’s Mary, besides you? Has your husband’s mother passed?
Mary: No.

John: It’s on his side of the family. Was the passing Andrew’s fault?
Mary: I don’t know. That’s what we’re trying to find out.

John: Because in a very minor, minor way he’s telling me the accident was his fault. He’s showing me my bicycle when I was a kid. With a humongous flag. It’s not that, right? I feel like he wasn’t visible. Was this in a residential area?
Mary: (Nods).

John: I feel like he jutted out. I feel like he’s taking responsibility for this. She might have been going faster than she should have, but I feel like he was the one who jutted out. Is he Johnny? Or Joey? Who’s that?
Mary: His friend.

John: And Steven? Who’s the “S”?
Mary: Steph?

John: Is that his friend?
Mary: Yes. Girlfriend.

John: Who’s Danny?
Mary: Another friend.

John: Was he in seventh grade, or sixth grade?
Mary: No.

John: Was he sixteen or seventeen?
Mary: Sixteen.

John: He was showing me a six or a seven. Feels like there’s a distance between you and your husband. Instead of coming close together, you’re here and he’s there. You guys need to talk, to get connected again.
Mary: I know, but I don’t know how to do that. His father is very much hurting.

John: He says you have to tell his father he’s okay. It’s important. He needs to … I feel like there’s a constant water-flow of emotions. He has not dealt with this and it’s important that he knows that his son is okay. He has to give himself the time and opportunity. The grief seems like he just cuts it off. You’re more accepting of this passing. It doesn’t mean you like it any more. He just had so many aspirations and like, “He was a smart kid. Why did this happen?”
Mary: Does he have a message for his brother?

John: He might not, so don’t look for that. Does he have his shoes or his sneakers?
Mary: Andy was wearing his father’s sneakers.

John: Who’s Chris – who’s the “C” or “K”?
Mary: Friend.

John: Does he have a ring? Or does your husband have his ring?
Mary: He has a watch.

John: He’s showing me something symmetrical. Did your husband want to give him one of his rings and he didn’t get an opportunity to? He’s talking about a ring … Did he play hockey?
Mary: That’s what I was looking for.

John: And you buried him with a jersey?
Mary: Not with a jersey, but a hockey stick on his headstone.

John: Because I see something sports-wise. Did you have a floral thing made with the sports?
Mary: Yes, the room was filled with floral arrangements in hockey motifs, and his hockey jersey was hanging.

John: Also, does his father have something around his neck that was Andy’s?
Mary: He wanted a chain but he didn’t get it and when he died (Tony) went out and got it for himself.

John: A gold chain?
Mary: Yes. Andy wanted one and he never got it. And out of the clear blue my husband went out and bought the same chain Andy wanted, without knowing which one it was. And my husband never liked chains or jewelry.

John: Okay, tell your husband he was guided to buy that by his son. I must not have had him [as a teacher]. Because I keep asking him to tell me who the teacher is.
Mary: I’m sure you had him. Because when I walked in I knew you knew him.

John: You did?
Mary: It was the way you said his name.

John: Now I want to know who it is! I’ll go room to room [in the high school building] …Okay, I just said, “Take me into the building,” and he took me in the front entrance. And I said, “Should I go right?” And he said no. So I said, “Should I go straight?” And he said yes. So I went straight and he gave me the feeling it’s downstairs on the first hallway. Yes?
Mary: Yes.

John: Don’t tell me. I will get it. I know who it is … does he teach social studies?
Mary: (Nods).

John: You know how I know? Because your son said to me … I said “Do something that I would understand, that I would identify with one of my teachers.” The only teacher who ever threw me out of a class … Mr. Miracolo?
Mary: (Nods and smiles)

John: I knew it! He was the only teacher to ever throw me out of a class. I had a trigonometry class that I wasn’t ready for the next period. And I asked your husband for a pass to go to the bathroom. And instead I went to an extra help class for trig. And when I came back, Mr. Miracolo looked at me and said, “You – out!” And your son showed me that. He wants you to know he’s okay. Did he have a certain restaurant he used to go to all the time? They have a mirror up in this restaurant with a like scratchy glass on it, like you can kind of see through it but you can’t. I feel almost like your husband was looking in that mirror and he saw your son. Your son’s confirming that you did see him when you thought you saw him.
Mary: Does he know how much we love him?

John: Just understand that this whole session comes through to you out of love.

Psychic George Anderson’s Afterlife Revelations

The following is a discussion with George Anderson ( by the radio and television talk show host Joel Martin as written in the book entitled, We Don’t Die (1989), by Joel Martin and Patricia Romanowski Bashe. George Anderson is perhaps America’s greatest and most famous psychic who has amazing paranormal abilities with the spirits of the deceased. His abilities are so great, he was once hired by the NYPD Homicide Department to solve unsolved murders. His abilities have been profiled on many television and radio shows as well. In these pages, he answers some questions about the afterlife thereby shedding some light on the near-death experience. I highly recommend all the books written by Joel Martin and Patricia Romanowski about George Anderson, We Are Not Forgotten (1992), Love Beyond Life (1998), Our Children Forever (1996), and Lessons From The Light (2000). George Anderson’s latest book is entitled, Walking in the Garden of Souls (2001). The following is a question and answer session between Joel Martin and George Anderson:

Joel Martin: “Where is it that we go when we die? Does the other side tell you where we’re going?”

George Anderson: “Well, according to what they say, go through the different levels of consciousness. We’re working our way up. It’s like, to go up to the twelfth grade, you’ve got to pass the first through the eleventh. When we pass on, we do go into the tunnel, we can go through these little darker levels, which can represent a form of hell or purgatory, because these are the two negative levels, or the darker ones. But if we’ve been a good person, we generally just seem to pass through them very quickly and then we go on through the third and fourth levels of consciousness, where average people such as ourselves go – not everybody can be a Mother Teresa, who would probably go higher up. When we go through these levels we meet our relatives and friends greeting us at the end of the tunnel, much as in the movie Resurrection (1980) where they’re waiting and they lead us into the light. And there’s like a form of spiritual rejuvenation, like a reunion, like a party, ‘Hey, it’s great to see you again.’ We recognize each other by personality. As we all have individual, unique fingerprints, we each have a very singular personality. There’s no physical body, but there’s a spiritual body that may take on a physical form, but to tell you the truth, I think that’s only during a reading, so I can see and describe what the person being read can understand.”

Joel Martin: “Geographically speaking, where is it? Is it the stereotypical heaven, somewhere up above the clouds?”

George Anderson: “It seems that the next dimension is here, it runs parallel to this one. Making the transition seems to be more like a heavenly experience than a trip to the Hollywood-style heaven. I think that the reason we have the sense of being uplifted or believe that heaven is up is that we feel a sense of being uplifted in the next stage of life. When we become one in the next dimension, we feel that we understand everything, we feel spiritually and emotionally uplifted. That’s probably where the conception of going up came from.”

Joel Martin: “Can the spirits come right out and tell you what the other side is like, or do you have to put pieces together?”

George Anderson: “It depends on their degree of awareness and consciousness. Somebody may be having a different, subjective experience over there, so they would have a different interpretation of it. It’s just as it is here with us. For example, I’ll look at the sky today and describe the color as sky blue. Yet if there’s a different shade tinted in it, or the sun moves a little, or you look up even five seconds later, you could say it’s more turquoise, or powder blue. The same thing could be happening on the other side.

“I’ve never really heard any complaints about the other side, unless the person has gone over there and into the darker levels, for committing some serious crime, hurting people, or committing suicide. Generally, thought, most spirits I’ve heard from seem to be very happy, very content, very much at peace, very aware and knowing of themselves, even if they were very negative and very unhappy here. They seem to be aware of a lot of knowledge and to understand it all there more than we do here.

“Learning and growing seem to be what it’s all about there. And they are able to understand themselves, if they want to. I’ve been told by the other side that you have to make a prime decision over there. You have to face up to yourself and do something about it, otherwise you’ll just flounder and you won’t progress spiritually. That seems to be a very important issue, to recognize yourself, your positive qualities and your negative ones, and try to do something about it. I’ve also been told that they have tasks, jobs to do over there. For example, David Licata told us that he works with children and animals who have crossed over. It’s like having a job here, you just take on a spiritual job in the next stage of life, where you earn your soul progression by helping others crossing over, by helping people here find their way spiritually, helping people there to find their way spiritually, to be involved in various sorts of things.”

Joel Martin: “Does it matter what level you’re on to be able to communicate?”

George Anderson: “You might be inclined not to come to me if you’re on one of the darker levels. I would not be attracting anything that would be negative, so if you’re on the darker or the lower levels, unless it’s for a specific spiritual purpose, I would not discern you. A Hitler, to take one extreme, would put himself in such a state of darkness that he would literally not be able to communicate.”

Joel Martin: “Will a suicide, for example, remain on that dark plain?”

George Anderson: “Not perpetually. Through their own free will, they can progress. This is why it’s so important that people, no matter what your religious belief or persuasion, even if you’re an atheist, remember to pray for those who have passed on. Because that embraces them in love and encourages them to progress. The problem that the suicide faces in the next dimension is that, when you arrive in the next level, it’s not the pretty sight that the average passing can be. Their problem is that they cannot forgive themselves. When someone comes through in a reading and is starting to make me feel as if they’ve taken their own life.

“You feel like you’re in the presence of a ghost. There’s a chilling feeling. And it’s very important that those coming through acknowledge what they’ve done. It’s like getting up and saying, ‘I’m an alcoholic.’ Coming forward and saying, ‘I have taken my own life.’ A friend of mine who had recently taken his life came through and did not know how to go into the light. I kept telling him to go forward to the light, but he was afraid of judgment. He couldn’t forgive himself. Also, he was having a problem with the fact that after he had taken his own life, his spirit obviously lingered around the scene of the act. He could not overcome the memory of his father’s discovering him, and that was haunting him emotionally to a tremendous degree in the next dimension. What he and many of us don’t understand is that there is judgment there, but it is not done by God on a throne. Judgment rests basically with yourself. And we all know that the greatest enemy we can face is ourselves.

“It can take eons of time as we understand it before they go into the light. It depends on the person. You’re in control. You hold the reins. Those who’ve come through those darker levels have said that they’ve had to face themselves and realize that if they don’t shape up, in other words, learn more about themselves, they’re not getting anywhere.”

Joel Martin: “Why are they able to face themselves on the other side if they weren’t able to do so here? What changes?”

George Anderson: “One of the things that the higher entities in the next dimension say is that we can very easily cheat others, but we can never cheat ourselves or God.

“Supposing I went to one level and a relative of mine has gone to another level, how do we communicate?

“Well, again, part of it seems to be a matter of progression. For example, if your mother’s on the fifth and your father’s on the fourth, your mother can come down to your father’s plane, but your father cannot go up to her plane until it’s earned. So a lot of souls are inclined to dawdle on the fourth or fifth plane until someone they love very much joins them and becomes equal with them on that level so that they can work spiritually together.”

Joel Martin: “Once over there, do we main the relationships we had here?”

George Anderson: “It seems that you might be inclined to be close to a soul over there that you were close to here because you’re on the same vibration, or wavelength. For example, most of us have a friend who we feel is closer to us, more like family than someone in our own family. So do they, but they also seem to learn to love one another completely and equally, even though there may be a time when they’re more attracted to a single individual.”

Joel Martin: “Now, some spirits may choose to remain on the other side indefinitely, while others remain. When a spirit does come back, does it always come back to the same family it was with before, the same parents, the same loved ones?”

George Anderson: “We all seem to stay together with the same people that we felt close with – birds of a feather flock together. We may have different parents, our brother or sister could be our parent next time. But we do seem to stay with the same other souls that we feel a certain affinity with, or a good vibration with. This may explain why we feel closer with our sister than our brother, or why you feel we’ve always been together with the same people from the beginning, but maybe we meet different people along the line, who would highlight, enhance, or play an important role in our lives at that specific point.”

Joel Martin: “Some come back and some don’t? What determines that?”

George Anderson: “Well, several things. They say it’s best not to try to come back right away, they say it’s best to hang out over there for a while, to rest, reflect, gain some knowledge and experience, so that you’re more prepared for your next lifetime, and you’ll be better able to fulfill what you want to accomplish. But they do say that it’s up to you. A lot of the souls seem to go there and come back right away. Say you’ve been killed in a war and you feel cheated in your life. You want to come back out of hostility and anxiety. It’s better to throw off the negativity and come back in a more positive frame of mind.

“On the other side, certain souls have said that they’re going to wait out their time there. They have decided not to come back, even though it could take eons of time as we understand it to work out soul growth over there. On the other side you’re not subjected to temptation, whereas here we’ve dealing with a positive and negative vibration of discord, which can be difficult, as many of us will attest. But a lot of souls I’ve spoken to have said ‘no way,’ they don’t want to be tested to go into the flesh again, they just want to stay there and just work it out as long as it takes.”

Frederic W. H. Myers’ Afterlife Communications

Frederic W. H. Myers (1843-1901), a brilliant scholar and one of the founders of the Society for Psychical Research, and author of the book Human Personality and its Survival of Bodily Death. Myers reportedly communicated to spiritualist mediums all over the world shortly after his death. Myers may have decided that the best way to prove that he still existed after death was to send a series of messages through different mediums. The Myers communications assert that the afterlife is divided into stages, each with its entry phase, a period of development, and a period of preparation for the next higher stage. One receives an impression that it is the aim of the Creator to “take into the firm,” as junior partners, as many as can qualify. There are seven stages, which are levels of consciousness, or realms of existence. The following is a description of these levels and comparisons of Myers’ descriptions of them with known descriptions from more well-known sources, such as Edgar Cayce and the majority opinion of Spiritualists. The section on the Myers correspondences are reprinted by permission from Victor Zammit.

1. Stage One After Death

Stage One is, of course, the Earth realm. As soon as the Earth experience has been thoroughly comprehended – either through reincarnation, or through the exchange of experience with others on other realms – the candidate may proceed to realms beyond the reach of the Earth mind. After death a person enters Stage Two, the Intermediate Realm.

According to Edgar Cayce, the Earth realm, being the third realm from the sun, represents three-dimensional reality. This is the realm of “testing” according to Cayce, or “of the flesh.” He mentioned in his psychic readings that all souls come to Earth to test their spiritual ideals to see if they are real. He stated that only by becoming subject to the physical influences of the flesh and the laws of the Earth realm can a soul know for certain if they really possess that spiritual ideal. This is the purpose of the Earth realm.

2. Stage Two After Death

Upon death, most people go through a heavenly process before entering into heaven. Evil people, instead of experiencing the tunnel and bright light upon death, are sent through what psychic Sylvia Browne calls the “Left Door” and enter into an abyss of empty, joyless, nothingness for a brief period of time. After they have reflected upon their actions, they are reincarnated back to Earth. People who commit suicide are sent to a place Sylvia Browne calls the “Holding Place.” Here they must make a choice to either proceed through the “Left Door” or embrace God and move on to the Light. People in the Holding Place shuffle slowly around in despair in a gray fog with their heads down until they make their decision. According to Sylvia Browne, this is purgatory. It is interesting to note that many near-death experiencers, including George Ritchie, have seen this place.

3. Stage Three After Death

After Stage Two, a person enters a more stable world called the “realm of illusion“, Stage Three. This is a dimension where things may be created with the mind and shaped by the direct action of the imagination. Though a person may linger in this stage for generations, an eventual decision must be made. The individual either returns to Earth or progresses to Stage Four. Before leaving, however, the more enterprising souls may have an opportunity to experience one of the great wonders of this realm of consciousness – a tour through some section of “The Great Memory.” Just as on Earth, one may go to a library and see newsreels of important Earth events of history. So, in Stage Three, one may witness any event that has occurred from the beginning of human experience. Everything that has ever happened has been recorded by the cosmic memory.

Spiritualists call this realm “the second heaven.” Most people who die initially find themselves in the second heaven or intermediate astral realms. Viewed as a sort of resting point on the way from Earth to the more rarified upper dimensions, it is a thought-created universe that closely resembles an idealized Earth. Its inhabitants seem to live in physical bodies, wear clothes and so forth – but of an etheric kind that would be invisible on Earth. Most attempts to communicate from heaven stem from here; but because its inhabitants are as yet unfamiliar with the afterlife, these communications can be confusing or wrong.

This stage corresponds to the invisible plane associated the planet Mercury, according to Cayce. The Mercury realm is the realm of the mind where souls go to develop their mental abilities. Cayce stated:

“Mercury gives the abilities of the entity to consider the problems as a whole with the mental insight into the operative elements of ennobling, of virtues, of good, of beautiful, with the mysteries of the universal forces, given understanding, brings the development to the soul’s forces.”

4. Stage Four After Death

Stage Four, an indescribably lovely existence, is called the “realm of color.” Here one must leave behind all rigid intellectual structures and dogmas, be they scientific, religious, or philosophical. An infinite variety of new sounds, colors and feelings are experienced here and souls find a much wider freedom to function with more highly energized intellect and spirit.

Since Myers had not progressed beyond the fourth realm at the time of his communication, his reports of the higher levels of consciousness beyond this are less detailed and more speculative. He seems to have picked up enough hearsay, however, to outline with some confidence the general nature of the further advance.

If, on the fourth realm, the soul becomes free from the Earth pull, the soul is qualified to experience cosmic ranges beyond Earth’s confines. One of these ranges is the next realm, the “realm of flame.”

The realm of color corresponds to the Spiritualist’s “third heaven.” The third heaven or higher astral realm is also referred to as “The Summerland“, as it is the closest thing to the Christian concept of paradise.

The most inspired and pure souls from Earth pass directly here after death; most people, however, must strive to reach it after a sojourn in the realm below where they assess their life on Earth and try to understand what they did wrong. It is from the third heaven that rebirth back on Earth supposedly occurs – although the decision to go back and try again is allegedly an individual one, and some may opt to forsake material life altogether and move into the higher spiritual realms. Some of the most accurate and most inspirational messages received via mediums are said to originate here. This may also be the place called “Marduk” according to the messages received by some researchers.

The fourth realm corresponds to the afterlife dimension associated with the planet Venus, according to Cayce. Venus is the afterlife realm where love is dominate. Cayce says this of heavenly realm Venus:

“In Venus we find the lovely becoming the expressions in activities in which there is the beauty seen in love, in companionship, in association, in music, in art, in all the things that bespeak of the loveliness even of nature and material things, rather than the expression of same in the earthly form or manner.”

5. Stage Five After Death

In the fifth realm, the “realm of flame,” one acquires a body of flame, enabling him to tour the stellar universe without being harmed by its temperatures and turbulence and to return with a fuller experience of these cosmic reaches.

This realm corresponds to the spiritualist’s “fourth heaven.” In the fourth heaven, which some refer to as the mental and causal realms, most of the trappings of materialism have gone. It is here that selfless individuals work together to bring spiritual enlightenment to the lower slopes of heaven and to Earth. Supposedly all great inventions, religious and moral progressions, spiritual leadership and so on, come from here, inspired by beings who were once on Earth but have had the opportunity to increase their talents in the afterlife.

A few rebirths to Earth do take place from this higher realm. Great teachers are sent back for special reasons. Spirit guides who talk through mediums are often in this realm as well, bringing their enhanced knowledge to Earth.

This realm corresponds to the planetary dimension of Jupiter, as revealed by Edgar Cayce. Cayce calls this realm the “realm of strength.” Cayce stated:

“We find in Jupiter that Universal Consciousness, that longing for the knowledge of something outside of self – the universal desire or the desire to be of help to many irrespective of the cost to self.” Also, “In Jupiter we find abilities in a helpful, universal way and manner. Hence the entity is given to verboseness, as well as abilities to depict situations, to analyze people and places, things and conditions. Thus may the entity be gifted in writing, lecturing, and in group direction.”

6. Stage Six After Death

The sixth realm is called by Myers, the “realm of light.” Individuals on this realm are matured spirits, having lived through, with conscious comprehension, all the aspects of the created universe. They are capable of living now without form, of existing as white light in the pure thought of the Creator. They have joined the immortals, thus fulfilling their final purpose of the evolution of consciousness.

Spiritualists call this realm the “fifth heaven.” Reaching the fifth or celestial heaven is difficult, because it is devoid of a physical state and aspired to by great religious figures, from Jesus to Buddha. Even those in lower heavenly regions view it as most of us still on Earth imagine heaven – a distant, magical, unknown place.

This realm seems to correspond to the afterlife dimension associated with the planet Neptune, described by Cayce to be the “realm of mysticism, mystery, and spiritual insight.”

7. Stage Seven After Death

The seventh stage, in which the soul enters full partnership with God, is beyond Myers’ verbal reach. Myers knew that the levels of consciousness in the upper ranges were beyond the insight of the average Earth dweller except for intuitive flashes. The seventh stage, which Myers called “timelessness,” is inhabited by souls with an advanced spiritual nature that is so close to the ultimate essence of creativity that no adequate vocabulary has yet evolved to describe them, and hence they are difficult to describe to Earth-level beings.

This realm is referred to by spiritualists as the “sixth heaven.” The sixth heaven is cosmic consciousness where the unity of souls is perfected and a kind of universal being exists. This may be close to what we think of as God, but it is even less understood by those on the lower astral realms.

This realm also seems to correspond to the afterlife dimension associated with the planet Uranus which was described by Edgar Cayce as the “realm of the psyche.” Cayce states:

“In the Uranian influence we find the interest in the spiritual things.” Also, “The tendencies from Uranus towards the occult and the mystic forces; as visions, hearing, seeing and knowing without having the physical contact with experiences in the mental body.”

According to Cayce, all psychics have had a sojourn within this planetary realm before incarnating to the Earth realm.

8. The Seventh Heaven

This realm was probably beyond the reach of Myers as well because it wasn’t described in his correspondences. To reach the seventh heaven, one has to step not only beyond material and physical reality but beyond mental and individual reality as well. It is simply not possible to define what this ultimate level may be, but reaching it is supposedly the goal of all individual souls. Everything that we do, on Earth and in heaven, is directed towards that final transformation because there is evolution of the soul just the same as there is evolution of the body, or indeed of all life, back on Earth.

The final realm was referred to by Edgar Cayce as the afterlife dimension associated with the star system of Arcturus. According to Cayce, once the soul becomes free from the influences of our solar system, the soul is free to sojourn to other solar systems. Cayce calls the Arcturus solar system to be “of the Developing.” Also:

“Arcturus is that through which individuals pass and at which period there comes the choice of the individual as to whether it is to return to complete there – that is, in this planetary system, our sun, or the Earth’s sun and its planetary system, or to pass on to others.”

Cayce describes this as both a usual and an unusual step in soul evolution.

Psychic Betty Bethards’ Near-Death Experience Revelations

Betty Bethards ( (1933-2002) was widely known as a spiritual healer, meditation teacher, psychic and mystic. She helped many people find meaning in the cycles and stages of life, including the transition called death. She was well-known in metaphysical circles as a very wonderful and spiritual person who was blessed with a special ability. One of her more unusual claims to fame was that Elvis Presley died while reading Betty’s book Sex and Psychic Energy in the bathroom. Concerning her own near-death experience, Betty explains:

“After my first death experience, I lost all fear of dying. I realized that life and death are part of a continuum of being. Then I began to find real meaning of my life here on Earth. Death is nothing more than leaving the body, just like we do every night in the dream state. We all leave the body at night. If you jerk as you are falling asleep, it’s a bad take-off. If you dream you are falling , it’s a bad landing coming in. If you awaken but can’t move your body, you haven’t fully merged with it yet. Just take a few deep breaths, relax and you’ll be fine.”

The following pages are excerpts reprinted by permission from Betty Bethards from her book, There is No Death (2000), in which she gives her description of what happens when we die. Other books by Betty are The Dream Book (2001), Seven Steps to Developing Your Intuitive Powers (2002), From My Heart to Yours (2015), Be Your Own Guru (1988), and Techniques for Health and Wholeness (1985).

1. Betty Bethards’ Near-Death Experience

My first experience with death challenged all my old beliefs about the nature of reality and why we are here in the first place. I learned that if we are ever to come to terms with the meaning of our lives here on Earth, we must understand the meaning of death. Only then can we see it with a total perspective, fitting all the pieces of the puzzle together. Otherwise, nothing makes much sense.

I returned home one night from a bridge game with a burning sensation in my chest and went right to bed. An hour later I awoke to find myself hovering over the bed about two feet above my body. A voice said to me, “You’re going to be very sick with pneumonia. Get to a doctor.”

[After two doctor visits which did not help her, Betty ran a temperature of 103 to 105 degrees and was on the road to death.]

Suddenly I was twenty feet across the room. Everything I considered “Betty” to be – memory, personality, senses – was looking back at that shell on the couch. I thought, “Gee, she’s sick. I don’t want to go back.”

Then a very gentle voice said from behind me, “You don’t have to go back, but this is death if you choose to stay.”

I had a body which appeared the same, was wearing the same clothes, and was raised about two feet off the floor. I wasn’t frightened at all, but felt wonderfully enveloped in peace. I knew then how Jerry had appeared to me ten years earlier. It was as if I could see things clearly, and knew that there was no such thing as death. I realized then that one never dies, but changes vibrations, and goes on living and learning on other levels.

I really didn’t want to go back. But then I started seeing pictures of my four children flash before me. It was a tricky way to get me to make up my mind to return to the Earth plane and finish what I was supposed to do. I was fine with seeing each child, knowing they could take care of themselves without me, until I saw my eighteen month old son. I knew he still needed me, and at that point I made my decision. I had to go back.

As soon as I thought this, the voice said to me again, “Unless you take an antibiotic within the next twenty-four hours, you will no longer have a choice of whether you wish to remain on the Earth plane.”

It was after this experience that I knew there was no death and that it wasn’t the way I had been taught to believe. I didn’t know how it was, but I was determined to find out. I had to wait two years before the teachings began coming to me.

[Within this period of time, Betty became more and more psychic until she was able to communicate with her spirit guides.]

2. Not the Same For Everyone

When the soul has been exposed to the opportunities it chose for a particular lifetime, it is allowed a release from the physical body. The soul knows when the time for release has come. Death is easy – life is hard work.

Death is not the same for everyone. It depends upon how you have prepared yourself during that incarnation, how old a soul you are, how evolved your awareness, and what lessons you chose to learn through the death experience. You may have chosen to learn courage and to build strength through a physical death with suffering. People who die slow deaths from such things as cancer or strokes are often givers who have never learned how to receive. Their souls may choose a slow death in order to allow others to give to them. But you can learn your lesson and move beyond the need for pain and suffering in dying. You may, in fact, have chosen a fast and easy death. Either way it is not a punishment, but a process of growth for both you and those around you. It allows you and others to work through difficult situations with kindness and compassion.

3. Seeing the Invisible

When you approach the time of death, often you’re able to see relatives who have crossed over standing around you. The etheric body slips easily in and out of the physical, and many times a person near-death talks to beings who are invisible to others. Doctors for the most part think you are hallucinating, but you’re not. Whether death comes rapidly or slowly, your loved ones know ahead of time when you are coming, and are there, prepared and waiting, happy that you have been released.

4. The Tunnel and the Light

First, you may experience your whole life flashing in front of you much as a drowning person reports this experience. Next, you will go through what appears to be a dark tunnel or dark tube which has a very bright light at the end. Most entities are just drawn to the light without anyone saying, “Go to the light.” It’s a past soul memory of having left the body many times, and knowing what to do.

This light is from higher astral levels, and you follow it to the one you have earned. However you have lived your life on the Earth side determines how high you can go into the light on the other side.

There is nothing to fear. You leave your body every night as you enter the sleep state. There is no difference. You cannot be harmed.

Fears are within, and this is why you must work to release yourself from fears on the Earth plane, because you will carry these same fears over to the next dimension. As above, so below!

5. Hanging Around the Living

Some people may want to hang around their old surroundings on Earth rather than go on to discover for themselves the beauty and wisdom which is offered to them on the other side. This may take a long time, but they are coaxed along slowly. Nothing is forced on a soul, neither attitudes nor understandings. This is why we are always counseled here on Earth never to force our beliefs on another person until one is ready to hear them. The free choice of every individual should be acknowledged.

6. Seeing Loved Ones and Teachers

When you die you are greeted by loved ones first so that you may understand what has happened. There is a big celebration, like a birthday party, heralding your arrival. Family and friends who have gone on before you are there to celebrate your arrival.

There is always good at the time of your cross-over. Even people who have lived lives of selfishness will know and understand the rejoicing. Whatever you have sown you are going to reap in terms of structuring your experiences and lessons which continue on the other side. But the first few days of cross-over (as you know time on the Earth plane) you are allowed to be with your teachers, and those who have loved you in the past. You are able to see those you left behind and to hear their thoughts and words. The first six weeks we stay very close to our loved ones on the Earth plane.

You are given glimpses of things you expected to see in order to bring you comfort. You may briefly see a teacher you worshipped in your lifetime: Jesus, Buddha, or another guru, according to your expectations. After the first seventy-two hours, however, you are gently brought out of many of your illusions and shown that you have not landed in an ultimate paradise with gold paved streets. Of course you could choose to create these for yourself on this plane, but once you truly understand you would most likely choose to be around that with which you felt most comfortable.

If you don’t believe in God or an afterlife, you will probably be kept in a sleep state for the first two to three day period. You will wake up in a beautiful meadow or some other calm and peaceful place where you can reconcile the transition from the death state to the continuous life. You are given teachings in the hope that you do not refuse to believe that you are dead.

On the other side you see things with a clearer, more objective nature, but you are not given total knowledge because you would not understand it or be ready to use it, any more than while you are here on Earth. We are given knowledge only as we are ready to receive it, whether we are in or out of the body.

7. After the Homecoming

After the first six weeks the soul meets with what may be called a loving board of directors. It is composed of teachers and other higher beings who have walked with you. These beings help you review your past life, to begin to look at what was learned and not learned, and what you wish to work on or do from this point. No one judges you, and this is important to keep in mind. You are the one that judges yourself and decides what is best for continued growth.

You will be given teachings, training, and anything you need to help you prepare yourself for your next incarnation. But this is not given immediately. You can choose your own pace and need not be hurried through the realms of the next realms. It may take centuries for your soul to know what is best for your development once you return again to a physical body. It may take a great deal of reflection before you determine a purpose and direction for your next sojourn on Earth. Since we reincarnate in groups we usually wait 80 to 120 years before we come back.

Also, as part of your training, you are allowed to watch people on the Earth plane to see how they handle situations when they reincarnate. Very few people in a physical body realize that their behavior is a teaching ground for those who are out of the body.

8. Reviewing Past Lives

As you are ready, and as you choose, you will be shown your past lives. If you do not believe in reincarnation it may take a long time before you are able to deal with this. Eventually, you must learn to understand yourself in a continuity of growth over many lifetimes. You must recognize all the strengths you have built and all the karmic ties you have created which must be dissolved.

By the time you are given the privilege of reviewing all past lives and integrating the knowledge learned, you will have reached a state of total objectivity. You will feel no remorse or condemnation, but will see it as merely a review of why situations occurred and had to be worked through.

The record of your life is very private. Only those who have walked with you as teachers are allowed to see what is called your akashic (or life) record. If during your lifetime you ask that a psychic tune into this record, he or she will only be given a minimal amount of information from it which is particularly relevant to your immediate problems or concerns.

You, too, can tune into this record through meditation and get insight and clarity on the problems you are dealing with. Your own attunement is much more accurate than asking a psychic or someone else to tell you about yourself. This builds up a dependency. We may need clarity or help at times, but should never develop a dependency on others. Our whole purpose is to gain strength and learn how to make our own decisions.

9. Religious Beliefs

Your religious beliefs have little to do with what you experience in the transition from one realm to another, except that you would be allowed to see briefly the teacher or guru that you followed. Regardless of cultural or religious beliefs, you will have the same basic experience at death (just as mystics of all great traditions attune to the same universal energy). What counts is what comes from the heart, not what one professes to believe. It means nothing whether or not one was baptized, for example, or whether one has various other rites administered. How ridiculous to rely on meaningless words!

The true meaning of baptism is an initiation of the spirit, an opening awareness to the God consciousness. People receive this inner baptism when they are spiritually prepared.

You will not suddenly be sitting at the feet of a man with a long white beard called God. God is within, whether you are in or out of the body. Your awareness of the God force will not be greater on the other side. If you insist upon searching for God, you will do this for awhile until you get the idea that you are following an illusion. We must go through at least four more realms beyond the astral before we could even begin to understand the energy of the God force. God is love in all religions, so the more we live love the closer we are to God.

10. The Idea of Purgatory

Catholics understand purgatory as a place or level of consciousness one goes for further understanding. It is an intermediary state that gives one the opportunity to develop further clarity. At first it is like being in fog, just as many people walk around on the Earth plane in a fog. They don’t have the clarity to understand how they are setting their lives.

If there has been much negativity during an incarnation, or a suicide, one must spend some time contemplating what has happened.

It is a holding place where souls who are confused, who do not want to let go of their earthly attachments, or who choose not to grow will remain until such time as they allow themselves to be released to flow once more into the light.

Purgatory is a place of your own making. We see souls who are punishing themselves here on the Earth plane. This continues after death just the same as it would if they were still in the physical body. Many people must suffer in order to feel worth. When they finally learn this is a negative number they are running, they can move on.

11. The Meaning of Hell

What about the reality of a place called hell? Hell is a level of consciousness which can be experienced in or out of the body. It is a lonely place where one is not allowed to be in communication with anything other than one’s own negativity.

Souls do not enter this level unless they need to experience it for their growth. Many people who commit suicide will have to go through this hell of their own making in order to become aware that this is not what they are striving for. The soul must learn that it does not have the right to take its own life, that it cannot kill, it cannot hurt other people; nor can it judge others for we have no knowledge of what they came back to do and learn.

Many people at one time or another have experienced this plane. Alcoholics going through the DTs and people on drugs, may also see it. It is a plane of total darkness where we must confront the fears we have built within our own minds. Understand that fears have no reality unless we choose to give them reality. As soon as we are able to meet them directly, to face them, they dissipate. This lower level is not for one’s punishment, but rather to provide the opportunity to confront and move beyond the negativity created by oneself.

The hell fire mentioned in many traditions is symbolic of the “kundalini” energy (Holy Spirit, God energy, or Creative energy) that dwells within the seven energy centers or chakras within man. Fire is symbolic of the cleansing and purification of the soul.

The struggle between higher and lower self or what some call God and the Devil causes growth, until finally the negativity or the destructive elements are completely overcome.

12. Laws More Protective

Through questions and answers I have received information about what it is actually like to be on the other side. First, my channel has pointed out that the laws are much more protective. We need no longer be exposed to both good and evil, for we have already experienced that. We see the bad only if we choose to. Those who are living in harmony will not be imposed upon by the ignorant, but can visit the lower planes to help another if they choose to do so.

For example, if you loved someone who is on a lower vibration than you are, you are allowed to visit anytime you choose by simply lowering your rate of vibration. This may help the entity greatly by encouraging self-love and growth. However, the entity will need to incarnate again on the Earth plane to test out these new lessons, because it is the Earth experience that determines your stage of evolution.

13. Marriage and Unions

There are unions of souls on the other side, and marriage as such is optional. If couples prefer to remain together they may do so, as long as their interests and growth are taking them in the same direction. If they choose to go in different directions, there are no hurt feelings. There is no possessiveness or demands. You are free to go your own way, in your own time, at your own choosing.

Married couples will be reunited after death, and may choose to stay together if they want to, provided they are on the same level of vibration. This is free will. If you have been married three or four times, you will find that you will want to be with the one whom you truly love. It could even be someone from another incarnation. You will be with those you love, and there is a total merger which is a much higher experience and a deeper love bond than anything you can know on the Earth plane.

This total merger is like stepping inside one another’s auras, a total blending of energies. It’s a way of expressing love and sharing. What you know on Earth as a sexual relationship takes the form of a higher merger of souls. There is no need for sexual organs on the other side unless you choose to have them. For this merger of energies is far superior to the physical mechanics of the sexual experience. This merger is not limited to husbands and wives, but may be experienced by any two souls who are loving and caring.

14. Tribute to Betty

Tribute to Betty Bethards (1933-2002)

“Life is eternal. There is no death. If people correctly understood death, they would no longer have any fear of the unknown” … “What we think of as life and death are merely transitions, changes in the rate of vibration in a continual process of growth and unfoldment.” ~ Betty Bethards, “There is No Death” pp. 90-91

“Overcoming the fear of death changes our whole perspective on life. Everything we do and think and feel takes on new meaning. When we realize that we are not limited by the physical, we begin to get the idea that we are really master of our own destinies and we more fully align ourselves with the eternal nature of our beings.” ~ Betty Bethards, “There is No Death” p.83

“To be afraid of dying is like being afraid of discarding an old worn-out garment.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“In order to know through experience what happens beyond death, you must go deep within yourself. In meditation, the truth will come to you.” ~ Shri Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas

Dear Friends,

Soon after my spiritual opening, I (Ron Rattner) met Betty Bethards who then was a prominent San Francisco Area author, meditation teacher, psychic/mystic counselor and healer. For many years I had a harmonious rapport and an important friendship with Betty. And I continue to honor her because her teachings and friendship have been significant and helpful in furthering my spiritual evolution.

So today I am sharing online my tribute to honor Betty and to acquaint you with some of her spiritual teachings, which live on and continue help many people – fifteen years since her July 2002 transition.

This posting includes a brief biographical history of Betty’s transformation following her dramatic near-death experience at age 32, long before the term NDE was coined and widely publicized by Dr. Raymond Moody, Jr.. Also it includes verbatim excerpts from Betty’s first published book, “There is No Death,” which describes Betty’s profound experience of surviving apparent physical “death” and her continuing communications with supposedly deceased souls, including her two eldest sons who later died in Vietnam and in a California motorcycle accident.

Raised as fundamentalist Baptist, Betty ultimately gave universal spiritual teachings encompassed by most enduring religious paths, and she became an exemplar and channel for the path of Love. Though many people regarded Betty as a teacher of “meditation for the middle class,” I called her a “Baptist Bodhisattva,” who humbly and without self-aggrandizement was lovingly dedicated to helping all sentient beings develop their spiritual potentials. Her energy field was so palpably powerful that many people often felt uplifted just being in her presence.

I hope that in reading Betty’s transformation story and teachings, you too will feel spiritually uplifted.

And so may it be!
Ron Rattner,
